Badger Fire Protection, (formerly Figgie Fire Protection Systems) was formed in September, 1992 from the consolidation of ASCOA Fire Systems and Badger-Powhatan. Badger-Powhatan traces its origins back to the last century. In 1832, the Powhatan Brass and Iron Works was established in Ranson, West Virginia. The name was taken from the great Chief Powhatan, supreme leader of the confederation of Algonquin tribes in the early 1600's. Badger Fire Extinguisher Inc. also was formed before the turn of the century and was granted Underwriter Laboratories Listing No. 2 in hand-held fire extinguishers during the 1890's. Badger and Powhatan became part of Figgie International in 1965, and were joined into a single operating unit in 1968. The company was acquired by Williams Holdings in 1995.
